Evaluation 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When creating our music video to make it as professional as we could we had to take into consideration and develop the forms and conventions from existing music videos that are already in the music market. To develop these forms and conventions we had to research existing music videos that are similar to the genre, then plan how we would challenge these forms and conventions

Narrative: When planning our music video myself and my group all decided that our music video would have a mainly focus on a narrative whist being performance bases as well. We wanted the music video to mainly focus on the
narrative to get the story across to the viewer, but we felt it would need a performance as well to give the music video the pace that the song had, this would fit into the genre of the song choice, as it was a rock pop song most rock pops music videos have narrative performance based music videos. We felt having a narrative performance based music video would suit the conventions of real media products as well as we felt it would be best for the song choice.
We based the narrative on how we interpreted the song as a group, we tired to make the visuals link with the lyrics of the song, for instance “last night I knew what to say but you weren’t there to here it” we had the main boy character typing out how he felt and then deleting the words.

Camera: The use of camera was very important in our music video as it helped to create the mood of the video.  We tried to use as many possible different shots possible. We used a high angle shot to show the audience the relationship building up to do this we had to use the flip screen on the video camera to make sure that the both actors where in the shot. Using a high angle shot was perfect for this part of the video has it showed the narrative of the music video well.
We used an extreme close up when the main boy character began to type on the computer, we felt this was needed so the audience knew what he was typing before they saw it, it gave a vary of shots during this scene of the music video as well. During the end most important scene of the music video we felt that an over the shoulder shot was necessary as it would also act as a point of view shot this shot was to show the audience what the girl was reading in the note as well this would give the audience a feeling that they were watching the narrative unfold like they were actually there. We also used many long shots and mid shots, we chose to use these more than any other shot as it fitted in with the song choice and the narrative so that the audience would know the whole narrative we felt that long shots and mid shots showed the narrative much clearer however we did use a vary of angles in the mid and long shots to vary the shots a little. However as we wanted our media production to be as professional as it could be compared to other existing media products this is why we chose to use a vary of shots such as close up’s and high angle shots as well as mid and long shots. We wanted the audience to be interested throughout the video therefore to create this element we needed to use a vary of different shots and camera angles.

Presenting an upcoming artist: Throughout this media product we had to keep in mind that we were presenting a new upcoming artist to the world though this music video. We had to think carefully about how we would want people to perceive the band this would be done though mise en scene as well as using close up shots on the main boy character in our band, this close up was established early on in the music video so that the audience would know he was the main character.  As this would be the first music video that the band would have done all characters in the narrative were the members of the band, this was to make sure that the audience would know that. We wanted our band to be rock star as well as individual, we wanted our target audience to be of a younger generation who were into this type of genre of music we done this though mise en scene.

Mise en scene: We kept the costumes for the characters in the video the same for the narrative we chose the girl, Rhianna in the narrative to wear a dress, to show her feminine side, even though the dress had quite a rock feel to It being dark red and blue checked. Choosing for Rhianna to wear a dress seemed important as it showed her feminine side to the audience, as she was the only girl featured in the video and band.
During the narrative we chose Nathan, our man boy character in the narrative as well as the band to wear very smart clothes to fit in with the geeky nerd type. This clothing would contrast on Pete’s clothing that was wearing a dark hoodie with baggie jeans. Wearing dark clothing gave connotations of rebellious behaviour this is what we wear aiming for throughout the narrative of the video. During the narrative of the video as I mentioned before Rhianna is wearing red and blue dress, the dress shows the feminine smart side of her where as the colours she wears are dark, this shows that Rhianna is torn between the two boy characters though her clothing.
For the extras used in the video we wanted the girls and boys to look smart – casual whist wearing clothing that would fit into the genre of music. The girls however wore hair accessories to show their feminine side more and the boys wore typical boy clothes.
During the band shots we changed the costumes of the band to show the difference between the performance and the narrative of the music video. We wanted to keep with the genre of music showing this by their clothing.  We chose Nathan and Pete to wear baggy jeans and dark grey and white t-shirts with rock symbols on them to show their rock side during the video. We chose Rhianna to wear a plan white top with a very colourful scarf to show that she was feminine as well as a rock chick.
Props: We used a vary number of props in the video; we created a love note that the main boy character had wrote. This love note had be screwed up, the note being screwed up shows how shy the character was to show his love for the girl.

Rhianna during the video is seen with a dark purple bag, the dark purple showing her rock side and also her feminine side as most women carry hand bags around with them.
There is also a scene in which Nathan tries to say how he feels to Rhianna on msn; in order to do this we had to use a computer, using msn as well as a computer makes the band seem modern band.
Instruments were one of the main props in the video during the performance part of the video. Instruments showed their rock band side.
Setting: We used many different locations in our video to make the video more exciting, for the fight scene we chose a quite part of a park, this made the fight seem as if it happened in private making it more dramatic.  As the garden park was quite we used this location for a scene where Nathan cheers Rhianna up, this worked well as it felt secluded.
Using the library as a location made this shot seem a lot tidier than using a classroom it also gave us good lighting to film in it also established the age of the students in the video, it shows they are still in education so the target audience can relate to the situation.
